About the Role

The Design Phase Manager is responsible for leading the project team through the design phase, ensuring alignment of scope, budget, and schedule, and preparing the project for construction. This includes establishing budgets, schedules, regulatory approvals, bid packages, and resolving technical design issues while fostering an integrated team environment and maintaining clear communication with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners. • Lead project team through design phase to ensure customer experience, financial performance, and smooth transition to construction. • Achieve alignment of scope, budget, and schedule while maintaining construction readiness. • Establish and manage project budgets, scope expectations, and budget trending logs. • Create and manage project schedules and key milestones; hold team accountable. • Obtain regulatory approvals and permits. • Align design documents with project execution plan. • Prepare bid packages and contract manuals. • Resolve technical design and specification concerns. • Develop and review project margin plans to minimize risk and enhance opportunities. • Act as primary contact with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners. • Monitor and measure project success factors. • Foster an integrated team experience with clear roles and communication. • Facilitate designer selection and contracting for design‑build projects. • Mentor and guide design‑phase team members for career growth. • Develop and present project proposals. • Build relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and organizational levels. • Lead by example, provide coaching and feedback, and manage performance.

What You Bring

Mortenson is seeking an experienced Senior Design Phase Manager who can interact with staff at all levels in a dynamic environment. The role requires flexibility, resourcefulness, proactivity, professionalism, and confidentiality, with an aptitude to anticipate problems and devise viable solutions. Strong written and verbal communication and attention to detail are essential. The Design Phase Manager translates the owner’s vision into design solutions and construction parameters, leading the design process and team members, and may manage one large or two simultaneous projects. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in construction engineering, architecture, construction management, estimating, or a related field, and at least ten years of relevant experience. Candidates must possess strong risk‑management abilities, intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and related web applications, excellent active‑listening and communication skills, and the ability to travel up to 100%. The position offers a base salary ranging from $144,300 to $216,500, with higher rates for certain locations, and eligibility for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
