About the Role
The TMC Operator monitors freeways using Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) software, dispatches incident management personnel, answers calls from the State Highway Emergency Program (SHEP) patrollers, and coordinates with SCDOT, public safety and partner agencies. Responsibilities include detecting and responding to traffic incidents, logging events, and controlling Intelligent Transportation Systems devices such as cameras and dynamic message signs. • Dispatch and coordinate SHEP patrollers for roadside assistance and incident response. • Monitor surveillance camera feeds and other data sources to detect and verify traffic events. • Log events, lane closures, and road shoulder closures using ATMS software. • Operate Intelligent Transportation Systems devices such as cameras and dynamic message signs. • Follow standard operating procedures and complete required training and certifications. • Communicate with SHEP patrollers, SCDOT, SCDPS, law enforcement, fire, ambulance, and towing via radio/phone. • Answer motorist calls, provide traffic information, and transfer calls as needed. • Document all communications and activities clearly and concisely.

What You Bring
We are actively seeking experienced Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operators for the South Carolina Department of Transportation, based in North Charleston. The role operates the Charleston TMC from 6:00 am to 7:30 pm, with rotating 12‑14 hour shifts as needed for emergencies, evacuations or storm response. Starting pay is $20 per hour, with promotional opportunities after six weeks of training and after a year of high‑performing operations. • Minimum qualifications: High school diploma/GED, ability to sit for long periods, operate software, pass background and drug checks, complete 6‑week SCDOT TMC training. • Preferred qualifications: call‑center or dispatch experience, strong customer service, calm under pressure, extensive telephone/radio/computer use, effective oral and written communication, map interpretation, knowledge of SC interstates, ATMS software proficiency, accurate data entry, problem‑solving and teamwork skills.
