About the Role

The Construction Safety Specialist works across departments to support AvalonBay’s corporate safety and health program, ensuring compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations. Assigned to a community or business unit, the specialist identifies hazardous conditions, develops solutions, and supports all safety‑related functions within the organization. • Monitor work to ensure compliance with AvalonBay safety policies and all applicable regulations. • Conduct and document safety program inspections required by the organization and local authorities. • Stop work immediately when an immediate danger to life or health (IDLH) condition exists and coordinate corrective actions. • Track and verify completion of corrective measures for non‑compliant conditions. • Investigate safety concerns and incidents, providing necessary information to leadership. • Review safety and health submittals and recommend improvements to plans and documents. • Analyze incident data to identify trends and propose safety enhancements. • Educate team members on safety policies and conduct relevant training sessions. • Assist the Safety Department with overall program improvement and implementation. • Apply a proactive risk‑management mindset to anticipate and mitigate hazards.

What You Bring

The role involves physical activity such as climbing stairs and ladders, standing, walking, kneeling, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds while wearing required personal protective equipment. Work is primarily on‑site at community or regional offices with travel between locations as needed. Candidates must hold an OSHA 30 certification (or obtain it within 90 days) and CPR/First Aid certification (or obtain within 30 days); BCSP certification is preferred. New hires must complete AvalonBay’s orientation within 30 days and any additional training assigned by management. • Possess 3–7 years of safety or related experience with a high school diploma or GED. • Demonstrate knowledge of OSHA regulations, national consensus standards, and state/local safety laws. • Exhibit strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and proficiency in Microsoft Office. • Maintain ability to perform physical tasks such as climbing ladders, lifting up to 50 pounds, and using PPE.
