About the Role
The Electrical Engineer, Major Projects role supports the development, planning, and execution of dispatchable projects, particularly natural‑gas facility construction and power‑plant retrofits. Emphasis is placed on electrical and control systems such as transformers, switchgear, power distribution, and plant control systems, often across multiple regions and in collaboration with mechanical, civil, and project‑management teams. The engineer acts as a staff advisor and technical consultant, leading complex assignments that require new or improved techniques, procedures, and equipment. Responsibilities include providing technical documentation, field engineering oversight, coordinating project phases from design to commissioning, representing Xcel in bid and evaluation processes, resolving technical issues with internal and external parties, and mentoring less‑experienced engineers while managing budgets and forecasts. • Lead design, planning, and execution of natural‑gas facility construction and power‑plant retrofits. • Provide electrical and control‑system expertise for transformers, switchgear, distribution, and plant control. • Collaborate with cross‑regional project teams, mechanical and civil engineers, and project managers. • Act as primary technical contact on contracts, bids, and external stakeholder engagements. • Develop and improve engineering techniques, procedures, standards, and documentation. • Oversee field activities such as testing, installation, inspections, and commissioning. • Mentor junior engineers and coordinate work assignments for multidisciplinary teams. • Manage project budgets, estimates, forecasts, and work‑order processes.

All levels require a Bachelor’s degree from an ABET‑accredited engineering program, preferably electrical engineering, and demonstration of core technical competencies; PE registration may be required for senior or principal roles. • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program; electrical preferred. • 5‑7 years relevant experience for senior level (EIT/FE required) or 9‑15 years with PE for principal level. • Professional Engineer (PE) registration may be required based on business need.
