Set up, operate, and maintain coil winding machines while handling parts and ensuring safety.
Job Highlights
About the Role
The coil winding technician identifies coil part numbers and quantities from schedule or work order tickets, retrieves the necessary small parts, and inputs the part numbers into the computer‑controlled machine during setup. Physical duties include lifting up to 40 lb, bending, twisting, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and using both hands to handle materials, with or without accommodations, while adhering to proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage. Machine setup involves selecting the correct mandrel size, duct parts, insulation tape, paper thickness, wire or bar size, and aligning materials as specified on the setup screen. The technician installs and adjusts devices, loads strip, conductor, and insulation paper onto dereeling mechanisms, measures and verifies alignment, positions the coil form, and runs the machine to wind coils at the required rate, labeling each coil with its ID, work order, part, and machine numbers. Additional responsibilities include using various hand and hydraulic tools, applying pack‑out, performing lead‑folding and tape‑welding, operating a crimping tool, reworking defective coils, logging scrap metal, enforcing lockout/tagout protocols, and safely operating overhead cranes and hoisting equipment while following quality and production standards. • Identify coil part numbers and quantities from schedule/work order tickets. • Retrieve required small parts and input part numbers into the coil winding machine during setup. • Set up machine specifications including mandrel size, duct parts, insulation tape, paper thickness, wire size, and material alignment. • Install and adjust devices, load strip, conductor, and insulation paper onto dereeling mechanisms. • Measure materials, adjust as needed, verify alignment, and position coil form according to specifications. • Operate the machine to wind coils at the specified rate and label each coil with ID, work order, part, and machine numbers. • Utilize hydraulic and hand tools such as brazing equipment, soldering irons, pliers, scissors, rubber hammer, ratchet, wrenches, and bending tools. • Apply pack‑out, fold, insulate, and tape‑weld pre‑cut leads to the coil body. • Operate a crimping tool to attach wire to static shielding. • Perform rework on damaged or defective coils to meet quality standards. • Weigh and log scrap metal in the database and follow proper disposal protocols. • Enforce lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures to ensure safe equipment de‑energization. • Safely operate overhead cranes and hoisting equipment to move materials and finished products. • Interpret coil specifications using quality and production standards and computerized winding sheets/prints.
