About the Role
The apprentice will be responsible for local delivery and execution of fit‑up, fabrication, and core welding tasks, adhering to Johnson Controls principles, corporate policies, and plant operations. Duties include operating MIG and manual welding equipment, conducting technical inspections, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring safety and compliance throughout the work area. Key responsibilities involve applying a minimum of six months of MIG welding experience, operating a Miller Aluma Pro MIG gun, using GMAW and plasma cutting processes, reading blueprints and specifications, completing motor coupling installations, participating in training programs, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S and Kaizen events. • Perform fit‑up, fabrication, and core welding according to company standards. • Operate Miller Aluma Pro MIG gun and manual/semi‑automatic welding and cutting equipment. • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and work orders for accurate execution. • Conduct technical inspections, maintain detailed reports, and prepare management logs. • Follow all safety policies, practice 5S, and participate in Kaizen continuous‑improvement events. • Complete motor coupling installations and assist in trainee/trainer programs as needed.

What You Bring
The Fitter Welder Apprentice position is located in San Antonio, TX, on a second‑shift schedule (Monday‑Saturday, 3:30 PM‑2 AM) with an hourly rate of $21.50 plus a shift premium. This role offers hands‑on manufacturing experience under the guidance of seasoned professionals at Johnson Controls. Candidates must have passed the 2G plate welding test and the 6G short‑arc pipe welding test, possess at least six months of MIG alloy and steel welding experience, and hold a high school diploma or GED. Preferred qualifications include welding technical school certification, TIG welding experience, and strong interpersonal, problem‑solving, and communication skills. • Minimum six months of MIG welding experience and successful completion of 2G and 6G welding tests required. • High school diploma or GED required; welding certification and TIG experience preferred. • Demonstrate strong teamwork, communication, problem‑solving, and ability to work under pressure.
