About the Role
In this role you will guide a team of engineers, plan and deliver work within agreed timelines and quality standards, and champion best practices across the software development lifecycle. You will translate complex business requirements into robust technical solutions, manage risks and technical debt, and drive improvements in processes, tools, and Agile/CI‑CD practices. Recruitment, onboarding, and retention of top engineering talent will also be a key focus. • Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers, supporting performance, career growth, and wellbeing • Plan, prioritize, and deliver engineering work to agreed timelines, budgets, and quality standards • Promote adoption of best practices across the SDLC, including coding standards, testing, security, and documentation • Collaborate with Product, Architecture, DevOps, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions • Own technical delivery for assigned products or platforms, managing risks, dependencies, and technical debt • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and ways of working (e.g., Agile, CI/CD) • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of high‑quality engineering talent • Ensure compliance with UK regulations, data protection requirements, and internal governance standards • Hands‑on development with Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind (frontend) and Python, RESTful APIs (backend) • Designed, deployed, and operated solutions on AWS (EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, VPC)

What You Bring
Arcus is seeking an experienced, people‑focused Software Engineering Manager to lead and grow a high‑performing engineering team. The role blends technical leadership, people management, and delivery accountability to ensure secure, scalable software solutions that meet business goals and customer needs. You will foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaborate closely with Product, Architecture, DevOps, and other stakeholders. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, with proven experience leading software engineering teams in a commercial setting. Strong hands‑on expertise is required in modern frontend (Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind) and backend (Python, RESTful APIs) technologies, as well as extensive experience designing and operating AWS‑based solutions. Familiarity with Agile, Lean, DevOps practices, GitHub workflows, and tooling such as Jira and PagerDuty is essential, while knowledge of Azure, Docker, Terraform, and UK data protection regulations is a plus. • Proven experience leading and managing software engineering teams in a commercial environment • Delivered scalable, reliable, and secure cloud‑based systems • Strong GitHub knowledge: pull‑request workflows, branching strategies, and CI/CD with GitHub Actions • Experience using Jira, Confluence, PagerDuty or similar operational tooling • Solid understanding of Agile, Lean delivery methodologies and modern DevOps practices • Experience working with cross‑functional and distributed teams • Knowledge of software quality, security, observability, and performance best practices • Familiarity with Azure, Docker, and Terraform • Understanding of UK GDPR and relevant employment practices
