Senior / Principal - Flood Forecasting Modeller
Develop and lead flood forecast models and deliver real‑time flood forecasting services.

About the Role
Our national fluvial and pluvial modelling team delivers real‑time and non‑real‑time flood modelling to support flood warning improvements, FCERM studies and strategic infrastructure projects across energy, transport, government and water sectors. As an experienced modeller you will strengthen the growing UK real‑time modelling capacity, mentor junior colleagues and contribute to WSP’s international Practice Area Network on flood and weather forecasting. • Deliver and lead flood forecast modelling and hydrology studies using Flood Modeller, routing, and hydrodynamic techniques. • Prepare hydrology boundaries (PDM), perform performance testing, and conduct rating reviews and updates. • Perform quality assurance and independent technical reviews of existing flood forecasting reports and products. • Produce high-quality client- and public-facing deliverables, communicating complex data visualisations effectively. • Collaborate with the fluvial and pluvial modelling leadership team to enhance the flood forecasting service offering. • Mentor and provide technical support to less-experienced flood forecasting modellers. • Contribute to high-quality bid proposals and develop innovative solutions for client needs. • Manage project, commercial, and financial aspects of flood forecasting projects. • Liaise with clients and stakeholders throughout project delivery. • Promote and adhere to a “safety first” attitude in line with WSP health and safety policies. • Work collaboratively with global WSP teams despite the role being primarily UK‑based. • Conduct reviews and calculations that satisfy UK statutory bodies such as EA, SEPA, NRW, or DfI.

What You Bring
We are looking for candidates with an excellent understanding of UK flood forecasting techniques, rating reviews, Flood Modeller, PDM and performance testing, as well as experience satisfying statutory bodies such as the EA, SEPA, NRW or DfI. Strong commercial awareness, the ability to identify and win business opportunities, excellent interpersonal and analytical skills, and chartership (or a commitment to achieve it) are essential, while experience with non‑real‑time modelling is a plus. • Demonstrate deep knowledge of UK flood forecasting techniques, rating reviews, Flood Modeller, PDM, and performance testing. • Exhibit strong commercial awareness and a proven track record in identifying and winning business opportunities. • Understand client needs, challenges, and opportunities, leading to successful project acquisition. • Possess excellent interpersonal, report‑writing, technical review, numerical and analytical skills with attention to detail. • Hold chartership with a relevant professional body or commit to achieving it within an agreed timeframe. • Experience with non‑real‑time modelling is advantageous.
