About the Role
Key responsibilities include interpreting utility records and plans, supervising traffic device placement, operating designating vehicles and vacuum excavation trucks, maintaining accurate field documentation, coordinating surveys, training junior crew, representing Colliers in the field, operating locating equipment, conducting safety meetings, developing signage, performing QA/QC, and troubleshooting equipment. • Read and interpret utility records, as‑built/survey drawings and highway design plans to identify utility type, owner, size, access points, and approximate location. • Supervise and direct placement of basic maintenance of traffic devices. • Adhere to Health and Safety program and all applicable SOPs. • Drive the designating vehicle and vacuum excavation truck. • Fill out the field book legibly. • Record information for test holes. • Call “One‑Call” tickets. • Coordinate survey work related to SUE. • Train junior crew members. • Represent Colliers Engineering & Design in the field and communicate/coordinate with utility companies. • Record pole data and complete field sketches. • Maintain equipment and vehicles. • Use multi‑frequency pipe and cable locators (RD8100) and single‑frequency induction devices (Metrotech 810, RD5000, Pipehorn). • Follow proper tamping procedures and correctly patch asphalt and concrete. • Correctly use and maintain the concrete saw. • Operate an air and water lance to expose underground utilities. • Act as crew leader and direct SUE tasks in the field. • Lead tailgate safety meetings and develop site‑specific Health and Safety checklists. • Develop and implement Maintenance of Traffic signage at each site. • Communicate with clients and utility representatives. • Coordinate with SUE, Survey and CADD staff for SUE‑related tasks. • Perform QA/QC on designated utilities and test holes. • Train SUE Investigators I & II on proper designating and test‑hole techniques. • Troubleshoot designating equipment and perform basic repairs (fix leads, program equipment).

What You Bring
Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician III in Aransas Pass, Texas. The role works closely with engineers, surveyors, project managers and utility owners to identify utility conflicts using technologies such as electromagnetic line locators, ground penetrating radar, GPS, conventional survey and vacuum excavation. Subsurface Utility Engineering mitigates risks in new infrastructure design and construction, requiring high precision and technical ability. Candidates must hold a high school diploma or GED, have 5–8+ years of SUE experience, a valid driver’s license, OSHA 10‑hour, CPR, DOT qualifications, and be able to pass physicals, drug screens and obtain a TWIC card. The position may require occasional travel, including trips of up to two weeks and long‑distance driving. • Safely utilize jackhammer on various pavement and surface types. • Operate GPR proficiently. • Understand vacuum truck operation, troubleshoot and perform minor repairs. • Complete QL‑D linework. • High School diploma or GED. • 5–8+ years of experience in SUE, utility design and test holes. • Valid driver’s license with MVR consistent with CED Point System. • OSHA 10‑hour certification. • CPR certification. • DOT driver’s qualification. • Ability to pass DOT physical with minimum one‑year clearance. • Ability to pass Fit For Duty physical. • Ability to pass drug screen. • Ability to obtain a TWIC card. • Occasional travel; able to drive long distances and be away up to two weeks. • Ability to read, write and understand English for job communications. • Pre‑employment drug screen and ongoing random drug/alcohol testing.
