About the Role

Technicians are expected to work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjustment, and troubleshooting of substation components such as concrete foundations, ground grids, steel structures, buswork, switches, control cables, terminations, control buildings, conduit, capacitor banks, transformers, regulators, circuit breakers, and motor‑operated switches. They also maintain company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in proper condition. • Perform safe new construction, maintenance, repair, testing, adjustment, and troubleshooting of substation equipment. • Work with concrete foundations, ground grids, steel erection, buswork, high/low voltage switches, control cable, terminations, control buildings, conduit, and capacitor banks. • Install and service transformers, regulators, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, and motor‑operated/manual switches. • Maintain company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in proper working condition. • Operate heavy equipment such as bucket, derrick, boom trucks, backhoes, excavators, skid‑steer loaders, man‑lifts, pressure diggers, trenchers, track loaders, and rough‑terrain forklifts. • Interpret substation structural drawings, elevations, plan and section views, grounding details, and foundation plans. • Develop material lists, trace substation phasing, and verify three‑line diagrams. • Perform routine carpentry, concrete grading, foundation layout, and conduit installation. • Coach and mentor subordinates on crew tasks.

The Substation Technician – B is a non‑exempt role focused on construction, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment and systems up to 525 kV. Candidates must have 4–6 years of continuous hands‑on experience with substation apparatus, wiring, and related construction equipment. The position involves work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and may require long hours during emergencies, as well as occasional out‑of‑state travel to satisfy customer demands. The role requires a Commercial Driver’s License, personal hand tools, safety‑toed boots, and the ability to climb and work at heights up to 125 ft, lift more than 50 lb, and work in confined spaces. Candidates must be able to operate heavy equipment—including bucket, derrick, and boom trucks, backhoes, excavators, skid‑steer loaders, articulating man‑lifts, pressure diggers, trenchers, track loaders, and rough‑terrain forklifts—and be willing to work overtime or on short‑notice schedules, with up to 90 % travel. Technicians must understand construction standards, relevant codes, and substation drawing sets, and be capable of interpreting elevations, plan and section views, grounding details, and foundation plans. They must accurately appraise technical situations, develop material lists, trace phasing, verify three‑line diagrams, and coach subordinates on crew tasks. The position involves regular physical activity, frequent standing, walking, reaching, and handling, and exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving machinery, vibration, loud noise, and outdoor weather conditions. Safety compliance and adherence to company policies are essential. Key competencies include a strong emphasis on safety, self‑motivation, teamwork, customer orientation, reliability, professionalism, good appearance, high productivity, and well‑developed interpersonal and communication skills.
