About the Role
The engineer will prepare construction documents using MicroStation/OpenRail, develop horizontal and vertical geometry, site and facility layouts, grading and utility designs, and work collaboratively with civil, structural, and signal teams to integrate rail projects into broader transportation networks. Responsibilities include supporting permitting and compliance with AREMA standards, receiving instructions from project managers, ensuring accuracy and quality of designs, analyzing data for routine tasks, researching design options, making independent engineering decisions, and assisting in the preparation of plans, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates.

GFT is seeking a Rail Design Engineer to join our Transportation Team in Schaumburg, IL. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our Schaumburg office. The successful candidate will provide design services for a diverse rail project portfolio that includes freight, transit, industrial, and site‑development projects. The ideal engineer is creative, can solve design issues, takes ownership of work, and possesses strong listening and communication skills to interact with clients and the design team throughout the project lifecycle. Solid writing abilities and a desire to work in a dynamic, growing team of creative professionals are also essential. Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, EIT certification or the ability to obtain it within 12 months, familiarity with MicroStation, OpenRoads or OpenRail, competence in reading plans and shop drawings, ability to evaluate contractor compliance, and the capacity to work with public agencies, railroads, and private developers. Preferred qualifications are a special interest in rail, transit, or site engineering, experience with any Class 1 railroad or transit rail district, a previous engineering internship, and a minimum of two years of professional civil engineering rail design experience.
