About the Role

The role encompasses responsibility for electrical and communications systems such as AC/DC power, fiber‑optic installation, termination and testing, and various telecommunications protocols (cellular, serial, TCP/IP). It also includes oversight of traffic‑management and ITS hardware, including signal controllers, field controllers for surveillance and ramp metering, detection technologies (video, radar, acoustic, loops), traffic cameras, automated incident detection systems, and digital message displays. Database administration for Microsoft SQL Server and data analysis using Excel and Access are required, as is the ability to read system design drawings and troubleshoot mission‑critical environments. • Design, install, test, and maintain AC/DC electrical and fiber‑optic systems for TMC operations. • Manage telecommunications infrastructure, including cellular, serial, and TCP/IP networks. • Oversee traffic‑management and ITS hardware such as signal controllers, field controllers, detection sensors, cameras, and ATMS. • Administer Microsoft SQL Server databases and generate reports using Excel and Access. • Interpret system design and record drawings, monitor, and troubleshoot mission‑critical systems. • Mentor and train technical staff while overseeing personnel management. • Communicate effectively with NYSDOT, WSP, and other stakeholders.

What You Bring

WSP is seeking an Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer IV for its Hawthorne, NY office. The senior technical and supervisory role supports Transportation Management Center (TMC) operations, overseeing system technicians and delivering advanced IT design and support. The engineer works closely with the TMC Manager and NYSDOT ITS Coordinator to manage the full lifecycle of field and central hardware and software, including installation, operation, repair, relocation, and maintenance. The HVTMC operates 24/7/365, and the position may require work outside normal business hours. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information sciences, or a closely related field and possess at least ten years of progressively responsible experience in system design, development, or database administration. Required competencies include knowledge of systems networking and IT infrastructure, strong oral and written communication, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and demonstrated personnel‑management experience such as mentoring and training staff. A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to field locations are also necessary, along with adherence to WSP’s code of conduct, safety policies, and ethical standards. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, standard IT networking certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, Network+), and expertise in connected‑vehicle technologies (V2X, V2V, V2I). Additional desired experience covers conceptual ITS design through construction, integration and testing, research and development of advanced ITS technologies, RFP development, and drafting ITS specifications. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, an ability to identify emerging technologies and innovation opportunities, and experience coordinating information flow between ITS contracts and TMC operations. • Hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information sciences, or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of progressive system design or administration experience. • Demonstrate expertise in networking, IT infrastructure, and Microsoft Office applications. • Maintain a valid driver’s license and travel to field locations as required. • Preferred: master’s degree, CCNA/CCNP/Network+ certification, and knowledge of V2X connected‑vehicle technologies. • Preferred: experience developing ITS designs through construction, integration, testing, RFP preparation, and emerging‑technology innovation.
