About the Role

Key responsibilities include supervising lab technicians, managing daily work schedules, conducting laboratory testing of soil, concrete, and asphalt for civil engineering projects, and preparing draft and final testing reports. The technician must maintain laboratory quality control, perform equipment maintenance and calibration, conduct field inspections and sampling when needed, and promptly notify supervisors of any discrepancies or deviations. Strong communication with project personnel, clients, and co‑workers is essential for effective project management. • Supervise and coordinate laboratory technicians and daily work schedules. • Perform construction materials testing on soil, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete per AMRL, CCRL, AASHTO, and Caltrans methods. • Generate and review final laboratory reports for project managers. • Conduct field inspections, testing, and sampling as required. • Maintain laboratory equipment, perform calibrations, and ensure quality control of test results. • Communicate discrepancies and project issues to supervisors and project managers promptly. • Handle and transport lab samples up to 50 lb safely; possess a valid driver’s license. • Apply problem‑solving skills to identify data quality issues.

The San Diego geotechnical group is expanding and is seeking a Senior Materials Laboratory Technician. The role involves performing construction materials testing on soil, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete in compliance with industry standards such as AMRL, CCRL, AASHTO, and Caltrans test methods. The technician will learn and demonstrate proficiency in all laboratory methods while also assisting in supervising laboratory staff and coordinating their work. Qualifications require a high school diploma or equivalent and preferably experience with ASTM, AASHTO, or Caltrans testing procedures for soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, steel, and masonry. Candidates should possess effective written and interpersonal communication skills, problem‑solving abilities, and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. While certifications such as ACI, NICET, Caltrans, or ICC are preferred, on‑the‑job training is provided and candidates must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to safely handle lab samples up to 50 lb. • Utilize Microsoft Word and Excel for data documentation and reporting. • Obtain or hold certifications such as ACI Strength Testing Technician, Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician, or Aggregate Testing Technician (preferred).
