About the Role

The Leadman provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to craft workers in the work crew, assisting the Foreman while functioning as a journeyman. This role is responsible for laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing, and maintaining piping systems, supports, fixtures, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for a variety of steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and production processes. The position requires the ability to select appropriate pipe materials, install complex piping and HVAC systems, test for leaks, and perform welding of pipe supports to structural steel. The Leadman must also monitor safety protocols, observe production machinery for malfunctions, and support material handling and minor equipment maintenance. • Select type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to job specifications. • Inspect worksite to determine presence of obstructions. • Plan sequence on installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other workers. • Cut pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine. • Thread pipe using threading machine. • Bend pipe by hand or with pipe-bending tools and machine. • Mount pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceiling to hold pipe. • Assemble and install a variety of metal or nonmetal pipes and pipe fittings using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints and hand tools. • Secure pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers using hand and power tools. • Install and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls and piping. • Test piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure and observing gauges for indications of leaks. • Weld pipe supports to structural steel members. • Observe production machines in assigned area to detect malfunctions and operate machinery to verify repair. • Load, transport and unload material, tools, equipment and supplies. • Assist in lifting, positioning and securing material and work pieces during installation. • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment. • Use respiratory protection when required. • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules; perform other duties as required. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria. • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems. • Plan work and select proper tools. • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. • Compare and see differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures and objects.
