About the Role

Key responsibilities include applying technical standards to lead moderate‑to‑large projects, creating and maintaining technical documentation, and providing field engineering oversight for testing, installation, inspections, and commissioning. The role coordinates multiple project phases—research, design, equipment selection, procurement, and commissioning—and serves as the primary technical contact during bid and evaluation processes. Engineers also mentor junior staff, assign tasks, and manage budgeting, estimating, and work‑order administration to support project delivery. • Apply extensive technical expertise to lead moderate‑to‑large engineering projects. • Develop and improve techniques, procedures, standards, and technical documentation. • Provide field engineering oversight for testing, installation, commissioning, and inspections. • Coordinate and lead multiple project phases, including research, design, procurement, and commissioning. • Serve as the primary technical contact during bid preparation, contract evaluation, and external stakeholder interactions. • Mentor junior engineers and guide interdisciplinary teams on project tasks. • Manage project budgets, cost estimating, forecasting, and work‑order administration.

Senior engineers must hold a bachelor’s degree in an ABET‑accredited engineering program, with at least five years of relevant experience and an EIT/FE certification (or seven years without). Principal engineers require a bachelor’s degree and nine years of experience with a PE license (or fifteen years without). Both levels must demonstrate the core technical competencies defined by Xcel Energy. Preferred experience includes work in gas transmission or distribution, a solid understanding of 49 CFR §192, and collaboration with third‑party contractors and consultants. Experience with EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) project execution is also valued. These skills support Xcel Energy’s mission to deliver reliable energy to millions of customers across the West and Midwest. • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET); 5+ years experience (Senior) or 9+ years with PE (Principal). • Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, gas transmission experience, knowledge of 49 CFR §192, EPC project execution.
