About the Role

All work responsibilities are performed in accordance with these safety expectations. • Interpret and modify guidelines to address existing problems or processes. • Prepare complex designs, standards, studies, and analyses. • Conduct detailed design reviews of internal or external technical documents. • Prepare cost estimates and project evaluations independently. • Plan and develop project budgets with appropriate documentation. • Ensure compliance with codes, standards, and design, operation, and maintenance requirements. • Identify potential weaknesses in assigned work and initiate corrective action. • Document and share work to strengthen PSE engineering workforce skills. • Tailor problem solutions to PSE’s business environment. • Support emergency response work, including restoration efforts after weather or system failures. • Lead or coordinate junior engineers, assistants, field technicians, and contractors/consultants on specific projects.

What You Bring

PSE’s Engineering Operations team seeks qualified candidates for an open Senior Engineer – Substation Physical Design position. Specific details regarding work arrangements will be discussed further during the interview process. The engineer must possess a considerable range of experience, expertise, and understanding of electrical engineering topics related to electrical assembly design and construction. Solutions often involve complex issues, requiring interpretation of requirements, analytical techniques, and non‑standard solutions. The candidate should be flexible with shifting budgets and priorities, resilient to change, and promote optimism and synergy. This role demands extensive experience developing complex engineering plans, designs, specifications, standards, evaluations, and studies for new and existing substations. Assignments cover design of 230 kV, 115 kV and 12.5 kV open‑air substations, 115 kV gas‑insulated switchgear, above‑ground equipment layout, below‑ground conduit and grounding design, and related elements. The successful candidate will be well‑versed in PSE standards, NEC, NESC, and industry codes, and be able to communicate clearly to diverse audiences; knowledge of substation assembly and safe design practices is a plus, and the role supports emergency response when needed. The engineer demonstrates commitment to conduct business honestly, ethically, and consistent with PSE’s core values and Code of Conduct, ensuring duties meet all regulatory compliance obligations. This job is classified as safety‑sensitive under RCW 49.44.240 and is subject to pre‑employment drug screening, including testing for marijuana and its metabolites. • Communicate solutions to diverse personnel in verbal and written forms, including public forums. • Bachelor of Science degree or PE license in electrical, mechanical, civil, or related engineering field. • At least 8 years of experience in planning, design, specifications, field work, cost estimating, and scheduling. • Strong organization, documentation, prioritization, and project management abilities. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Utility industry experience. • Professional Engineering (PE) license. • Knowledge of engineering economics and utility accounting practices. • Experience on complex engineering projects.
