About the Role

The Designated Driver Trainer (DDT) is a dual‑role position that operates a route while also serving as a driver trainer to support new‑driver onboarding and ongoing development. The role balances daily operational responsibilities with hands‑on training to ensure safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Key responsibilities include safely operating an assigned WM vehicle, performing standard driver duties such as pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, and delivering on‑the‑job training and coaching to new or reassigned drivers. The trainer observes driver performance, provides immediate feedback, records progress, and reports data to managers while mentoring drivers and promoting WM’s safety culture. • Operate assigned WM vehicle safely, complying with WM Safety, OSHA, DOT, and all applicable laws; perform standard driver duties including inspections and waste/recycling collection. • Provide on‑the‑job training and coaching on vehicle operation, defensive driving, and safety practices for new, reassigned, or under‑performing drivers. • Observe drivers, deliver immediate constructive feedback, and ensure consistent safety and performance standards. • Instruct drivers on WM SAFETY defensive driving skills, WM Way processes, and OBU tablet usage. • Maintain accurate records of driver progress, strengths, improvement areas, and training recommendations. • Report driver performance data to the Route Manager and Onboarding Optimization Manager, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. • Mentor drivers, offering guidance and support to develop skills and confidence during role transition. • Act as a WM ambassador, promoting company values and high safety and compliance standards.

What You Bring

Required qualifications are a high school diploma or GED, at least two years of experience operating a WM vehicle with a Class A or B CDL and air‑brake endorsement. Preferred candidates bring recent military driving experience and a background in supervising, training, or coaching personnel. The position involves a range of physical activities—including standing, walking, lifting, and handling—performed in both indoor garage/shop settings and outdoor environments with inclement weather.
