About the Role

The Transport business unit creates, drives and implements transport solutions for cities, regions and asset owners, covering everything from business case preparation and policy advice to the delivery and maintenance of infrastructure, and contributes to the Global Transport Sector Strategy. The role is for a senior Technical Principal in Transport Planning who will lead public transport planning and business case development across multidisciplinary teams, working on high‑profile UK projects such as Clyde Metro, Midland Metro, Liverpool Rapid Transit and the Energy Coast Rail Upgrade. Based in one of the northern offices, the Technical Principal will lead delivery of transport planning services, manage project workstreams, mentor junior staff, engage directly with clients and stakeholders, contribute to business development and shape regional transport agendas.

What You Bring

The ideal candidate shares a passion for shaping the future of transport, has 10‑15 years of post‑graduate experience, strong technical expertise, and a collaborative mindset to work on complex, high‑profile investments. • Strong interest in transportation, transport economics, appraisal, business cases, placemaking and collaborative working. • Degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Engineering, Economics, Urban Planning or equivalent. • Membership or pursuit of chartered status with CIHT, CILT, TPS, ICE or similar professional bodies. • Demonstrated skills in transport policy, strategy, business cases, economics, scheme development, appraisal or sustainable transport planning. • Strong numerical and analytical abilities; proficient in spreadsheet analysis and economic appraisal; experience with MOIRA, Podaris, GIS, OpenPaths, Visum, etc. • Experience applying Transport Analysis Guidance and HM Treasury Green Book guidance in scheme development. • Excellent report writing and verbal communication; ability to present complex information clearly to clients and colleagues. • Experience contributing to successful bids and tenders; commercial awareness and client engagement capability. • MSc or postgraduate qualification in a transport‑related subject (desirable). • Project management experience (desirable). • Better Business Cases qualification (desirable). • Ability to consider public transport investment within broader placemaking and first/last‑mile connectivity (desirable). • Knowledge of regional transport and regeneration markets in the North‑West, North‑East, Midlands, Wales or Scotland (desirable). • Strong market knowledge and client connections in the candidate’s home region (desirable).
