About the Role

The Operating Engineer – Union (part‑time) role is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment across all building systems. Candidates must have deep technical expertise in one craft area—such as electrical, HVAC, piping/plumbing, or central utility plant operations—while also possessing multi‑skilled capabilities in other systems, ensuring safe, efficient operations and exceptional client service. • Operate facility systems safely, complying with regulations • Perform maintenance and repairs on mechanical, plumbing, structural, and fire/life safety systems • Service HVAC equipment, cleaning, inspecting, and replacing parts • Record equipment readings and adjust for optimal performance • Oversee contractor pricing and work quality • Respond promptly to customer inquiries • Support emergency response for fire alarms, chemical spills, and hazards • Maintain a City of Chicago Stationary Engineers License

What You Bring

• Hold high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of college or trade education • Possess four years of experience as an electrician or in HVAC/refrigeration • Ability to lift 80 lb and work at heights • Proficient with Word and Excel • Knowledge of building systems to improve cost efficiency (preferred) • Experience with thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical systems (preferred) • Skilled in operating computer‑controlled equipment (preferred) • Strong troubleshooting aptitude for complex facility systems (preferred) • Familiarity with safety policies and hazardous material handling (preferred)
