About the Role

The Mechanical Designer/EI role supports a variety of engineering tasks, from routine assignments and analyses to equipment procurement and performance testing. The position works alongside senior engineers on projects of all sizes and may also contribute to other disciplines such may be structural engineering or hydrology. • Perform routine engineering assignments under guidance. • Conduct analyses to develop design options, cost estimates, and specifications. • Provide owner’s engineering support for equipment overhauls, rebuilds, and new installations. • Support feasibility studies and conceptual designs for new or expanded projects. • Assist with inspections and condition assessments of existing facilities. • Support mechanical life extension and system upgrades of existing facilities. • Support mechanical balance of plant upgrades at existing facilities. • Prepare equipment procurement and design specifications. • Perform performance testing of hydro turbine equipment. • Conduct equipment and contractor bid evaluations. • Produce mechanical system designs, including P&IDs, equipment sizing, detailed design, and calculations. • Work independently on small projects or assist senior engineers on larger projects. • Perform duties across other disciplines such as structural engineering or hydrology/hydraulics as needed.

In the South Portland Mechanical/Electrical engineering group, staff must adapt to changing client needs and perform diverse functions, including desk engineering, field work, and project management. New hires are expected to function across several areas on a project under senior guidance. Preferred candidates have internship experience, an Engineer‑in‑Training (EI/EIT) certification or a willingness to obtain one, strong communication and time‑management skills, and are recent graduates or local applicants. Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and proficiency with Microsoft Office, along with a commitment to HDR’s employee‑owned culture. • Adapt to changing client needs and fulfill roles in desk engineering, field work, and project management. • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office. • Possess strong communication and time‑management skills. • Have internship experience or Engineer‑in‑Training (EI/EIT) certification (or obtain EI after hiring). • Recent graduates and local candidates are preferred.
