Data & Integration Engineer - Chicago, IL
Design and build production-grade data integrations and AI workflows for construction projects
Job Highlights
About the Role
The engineer will design and maintain production‑scale integrations (API, database, file‑based, event‑driven) that reliably deliver data into a central repository and power analytics, internal apps, and AI workflows. Responsibilities include end‑to‑end pipeline ownership, data normalization, metadata standards, monitoring, alerting, and documentation. The role also involves building internal tools and enabling AI use cases such as semantic search and summarization. • Design, build, and maintain production‑scale data integrations (API, database, file, event‑driven) into a central repository. • Develop and support a centralized data platform for analytics, internal applications, and AI/LLM‑enabled workflows. • Implement data normalization, metadata standards, and governance for reusable datasets. • Create monitoring, alerting, observability, and failure‑recovery mechanisms (retries, idempotency, backfills). • Contribute to integration architecture, data modeling, and AI‑ready data access patterns. • Build internal tools, web apps, and services enabling teams to discover and operationalize data. • Enable AI/LLM use cases such as semantic search, summarization, classification, and agent workflows with repeatable pipelines and human‑in‑the‑loop controls. • Design low‑latency data access patterns (views, APIs, query endpoints) for applications and governed analytics. • Evaluate and recommend tools/platforms based on outcomes and maintainability. • Debug integration issues and produce clear documentation (lineage, contracts, runbooks). • Success metrics: deliver 3+ production integrations, launch a data‑to‑application outcome adopted by business, implement monitoring/documentation, establish repeatable AI automation patterns.

What You Bring
A tool‑agnostic environment is emphasized, prioritizing strong engineering fundamentals over specific vendors. Typical source systems include ERP, project management, document management, and scheduling platforms, with data stored in a centralized repository that supports structured tables, document metadata, and vector/semantic indexing. Integrations must be production‑grade with secure authentication, incremental loads, observability, and recoverability. Minimum qualifications include a BS in Computer Science or related field, 4 + years of data engineering, systems integration, or automation experience, and proficiency in SQL and Python. Preferred qualifications include A/E/C industry experience, expertise with APIs, ETL/ELT workflows, monitoring, AI/LLM integration, version control, cloud data platforms, and orchestration frameworks. Candidates should be able to operate independently and work with non‑technical stakeholders. The position does not offer sponsorship for U.S. work authorization, relocation assistance, or remote work; it requires on‑site presence in Chicago. Applicants must pass a pre‑employment substance‑abuse test. • Own end‑to‑end data pipelines: ingestion, normalization, storage, and access via BI, APIs, and agents. • Minimum: BS in Computer Science or related field, 4+ years data engineering/integration experience, SQL, Python. • Preferred: A/E/C experience, API/ETL expertise with pagination, rate limits, secure credentials, monitoring, AI/LLM workflow integration, version control, cloud data platforms, orchestration frameworks.
