About the Role

The Principal Planner will lead and assist on key planning policy projects, providing strategic advice, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and engaging directly with clients, local authorities and stakeholders to secure successful outcomes. Responsibilities include team leadership, quality assurance, project delivery within budget and schedule, and representing AECOM at conferences and networking events. • Lead and assist on planning policy projects, including local plans, evidence studies, and strategic growth studies. • Provide strategic planning advice to clients and internal teams. • Build and maintain relationships with clients, local authorities, and stakeholders. • Manage project delivery within budget and schedule, coordinating multidisciplinary teams. • Oversee quality assurance, health and safety, and deliverables of the planning policy team. • Represent AECOM at conferences, networking events, and industry forums. • Contribute to business development and prepare commercial tenders to secure new work.

What You Bring

Candidates must have significant experience leading planning policy and strategy development in consultancy or public‑sector roles, strong client‑focused interpersonal skills and existing relationships with local authorities. A degree in Town Planning (or related field) and RTPI (or equivalent) membership are required, together with the ability to produce high‑quality technical reports, work autonomously under pressure and demonstrate a business‑development mindset. • Hold a degree in Town Planning (or related discipline) and RTPI (or equivalent) membership. • Demonstrated experience leading planning policy and strategy development in consultancy or public sector. • Strong client focus with existing relationships with local authorities. • Ability to produce high‑quality technical reports and communicate effectively. • Proactive, works under pressure and takes initiative.
