About the Role
The Consulting Director, Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Engagement will lead client projects, develop cross‑functional strategies, manage budgets and teams, and serve as a strategic advisor for communications, stakeholder engagement, and ESG initiatives. They will also drive business development and internal marketing efforts. • Develop cross‑functional strategies with internal teams to support client projects. • Support internal and external marketing to help clients maintain their social license to operate. • Lead day‑to‑day project management, including client relations, staffing, budgeting, and deliverables. • Advise clients and guide teams in planning and implementing strategic communications and stakeholder engagement programs, including large‑scale public consultations. • Stay current on industry best practices and drive digital innovation using ERM tools and technologies. • Oversee analysts in delivering social risk and community assessment monitoring for capital projects, M&A due diligence, and permitting. • Create equitable communications plans based on stakeholder demographics and accessibility. • Collaborate on ESG communications focusing on the “Social” component. • Manage staff and produce project materials such as fact sheets, website copy, newsletters, brochures, and letters. • Monitor and analyze stakeholder communications, produce reports, and identify trends. • Facilitate focus groups, community advisory groups, and other stakeholder engagement activities. • Plan and facilitate client, business development, and public‑facing events, both in‑person and virtual. • Drive business development through proposals, seminars, industry outreach, and subcontractor coordination. • Apply crisis management expertise when needed.

What You Bring
ERM is seeking an experienced communications professional to join its strategic communications and stakeholder engagement team in Boston, MA, delivering high-quality services to clients across the environmental consulting industry and various sectors. The role requires a BA/BS in communications or a related field, 8‑10+ years of relevant experience (preferably in public affairs or consulting, with energy industry exposure), strong written and verbal skills, expertise in public consultation programs, and the ability to work independently in a hybrid setting with 4‑6 weeks of travel per year. • BA/BS in communications, public affairs, public relations, community relations, journalism or related field (preferred). • 8+ years (10+ preferred) relevant experience, ideally in public affairs, consulting, or energy sector. • Strong facilitation skills for in‑person and virtual meetings and presentations. • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities. • Proven experience designing and executing public consultation programs and producing informational materials. • Ability to present concise, persuasive information to clients and stakeholders. • Highly organized, able to prioritize, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities. • Capable of multitasking, working independently with minimal supervision. • Willingness to work full‑time in a hybrid office/remote setting. • Travel 4‑6 weeks per year, including occasional evening/overnight trips.
