Job Highlights
About the Role
Drivers operate heavy‑duty trucks equipped with front, side, or rear lift attachments and transport waste or recyclable containers that can exceed 1,000 pounds. Responsibilities vary by line of business: residential drivers collect household waste, while roll‑off drivers load and haul large open‑top containers, both requiring skilled backing maneuvers in tight or congested areas. All driving must comply with WM safety rules, OSHA, DOT regulations and applicable laws. Drivers complete pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections using DVIR forms, report unsafe conditions or service issues promptly, and attend required training and briefings. They work with the Operations Manager to improve route efficiency, notify management of incidents or service interruptions, and ensure each receptacle is emptied and the site left clean. The role involves frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, crouching, reaching, handling, and sitting, as well as regular communication with customers and co‑workers. Drivers are expected to operate vehicles and equipment safely and reliably, represent the community they serve, and uphold WM’s standards of professionalism and punctuality. • Operate trucks safely following WM safety policies, OSHA, DOT and all legal regulations. • Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and complete DVIR documentation. • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, accidents, or property damage immediately. • Attend all scheduled training, briefings, and meetings. • Collaborate with the Operations Manager to improve route efficiency and share best practices. • Notify dispatch of service interruptions such as blocked streets or overweight containers. • Communicate customer requests to Operations or Dispatch promptly. • Follow assigned routes, complete end‑of‑day paperwork, and check‑out procedures. • Assist fellow drivers as needed to meet customer service goals.
