About the Role
The Assistant Captain operates ships and water vessels in oceans, bays, lakes, rivers, and coastal waters, conducting thorough inspections of vessels and peripheral equipment before each voyage to ensure safe and efficient operations while adhering to regulations and company policies. Key responsibilities include deploying, towing, and anchoring containment booms and other spill response equipment, maintaining job-related equipment in ready condition, documenting vessel logs and inspections, directing deckhands and passengers for safety, providing continuous training in safety and seamanship, conducting onboard safety drills, and handling paperwork such as customer and vessel logbooks, EPA discharge logs, and labeling.

What You Bring
The role requires prior knowledge and experience in oil response, the ability to travel domestically and internationally, strong analytical skills to interpret complex documentation and regulations, effective communication of technical insights, and proficiency with mathematical concepts and maritime survival craft equipment. Preferred certifications include a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential as Master of 1600 GRT with Radar license, any waters or near coastal lifeboatmen endorsement, STCW and GMDSS certificates, unlimited radar observer, Able‑Bodied Seaman Cold‑Water Survival, Tankerman PIC endorsement, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain API Rigger, Hydraulic Crane Operator, Confined Space Entry, and US passport as needed. Candidates should have 4 to 7 years of relevant work experience and possess the required certifications or the ability to obtain them within specified timeframes.
