About the Role
The Assistant Area Accounting Lead reports to the local Area Accounting Lead and supports operations Area Management. This role ensures that accounting practices and procedures align with HDR policies, accounting principles, and federal government compliance standards while providing leadership to the accounting staff. Key responsibilities include supervising, training, and mentoring accounting personnel, overseeing all facets of project and contract financial management, and maintaining general accounting functions for the Area. The position also provides assurance to senior management that financial processes are performed accurately and efficiently. Specific duties involve managing invoicing deadlines, facilitating revenue reviews and watchlist meetings, building rolling forecasts, conducting monthly OH/GL analysis, and tracking cost recovery, indirect labor, and seminar expenses. The role also creates and maintains area management reports, promotes Power BI reporting tools, ensures timely project closeouts, and handles a wide range of general accounting tasks such as accounts payable, credit‑card transactions, sub‑consultant payments, vehicle mileage tracking, and timesheet approvals. • Supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff across project and contract financial management. • Ensure timely invoicing and monitor invoice deadlines for Project Accountants. • Facilitate monthly revenue reviews and watchlist meetings, tracking action items. • Build and maintain rolling forecasts; assist with mid‑year and year‑end budgeting. • Perform monthly OH/GL analysis, identify variances, and coordinate corrective actions. • Manage cost recovery, indirect labor, seminar, training, and conference cost tracking. • Generate and maintain area management reports (BI, utilization, AR, rate sheets) and promote Power BI reporting tools. • Oversee project closeout processes and communicate issues to senior accounting leadership. • Handle department accounting functions: AP processing, vendor invoices, credit‑card transactions, sub‑consultant payments, vehicle mileage, TDY costs, and timesheet approvals. • Lead performance reviews, workload balancing, and cross‑training for accounting teams.

What You Bring
Preferred qualifications include a positive, proactive leadership style, strong organizational and communication skills, a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, at least seven years of experience, and proficiency with MS Office. Experience with Oracle EBS/Hyperion and A/E/C industry knowledge are added advantages, along with a commitment to HDR’s employee‑owned culture. Required qualifications specify an associate degree or equivalent experience, a minimum of five years in accounting, strong MS Office skills, excellent verbal and written communication, flexibility to manage multiple tasks, self‑motivation, attention to detail, and the ability to handle confidential information while embracing the company’s inclusive culture. • Bachelor’s degree in accounting (or related field) and 7+ years of experience (preferred); minimum 5 years with associate degree (required). • Strong leadership, analytical, and organizational skills; ability to manage and develop staff. • Proficiency with MS Office; Oracle EBS/Hyperion experience a plus; A/E/C industry experience preferred. • Excellent verbal and written communication, attention to detail, and ability to handle confidential information.
