About the Role
The Groundman position is an entry‑level role in the construction and maintenance of the nation’s power grid. Groundmen assist their crews in building, repairing, and maintaining overhead electrical distribution systems. This role serves as a first step toward a long‑term career with Pike Electric. Groundmen support their teams by ensuring safety, assisting line‑workers to meet project goals, and joining storm‑restoration efforts when needed. They operate vehicles and equipment professionally and pursue ongoing technical and leadership training. Core competencies include teamwork, self‑motivation, customer‑service focus, ethical conduct, and strict adherence to safety rules and company policies. Groundmen perform safe construction, maintenance, and repair on both energized and de‑energized overhead lines, inspect PPE, string wire, set poles and anchors, and assist with installing transformers, arrestors, cutouts, cross‑arms, insulators, switches, and related equipment. They also help replace fuses, clear faults, maintain vehicles and tools, operate radios, and apply basic rigging, knot tying, and bucket‑rescue techniques while working at heights and in confined spaces. • Ensure personal and crew safety on all tasks. • Assist line‑workers to achieve project objectives. • Participate in storm‑restoration and emergency response. • Operate company vehicles and equipment responsibly. • Follow ethical standards and company safety policies. • Travel long distances on short notice and work at varied locations. • Accept overtime, weekend, and holiday work as required. • Perform safe construction, maintenance, and repair on energized and de‑energized lines. • Inspect and use personal protective equipment correctly. • String overhead wire and set poles, anchors, and cross‑arms. • Assist in installing transformers, arrestors, cutouts, insulators, switches, and switchgear. • Replace transformer fuses and clear faulted circuits. • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and hand tools in good condition. • Operate company radios and follow communication protocols. • Apply basic rigging, hand lines, and knot‑tying techniques. • Conduct basic bucket‑rescue and escape procedures. • Climb wooden or steel structures using appropriate tools and Kellum grips.

What You Bring
The job demands regular standing, walking, climbing, lifting or moving 50 lb or more, and performing rigorous physical labor in varied weather conditions. The work environment includes exposure to fumes, mechanical vibration, loud noise, and outdoor conditions. Applicants must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days, communicate effectively in reading and writing, and be prepared to travel long distances on short notice. The role requires the ability to work extended periods at different locations, lift over 50 lb, and accept overtime, weekend, and holiday schedules as needed. • Demonstrate teamwork, self‑motivation, and customer‑service focus. • Obtain a CDL permit within 60 days of hire. • Communicate effectively in reading, writing, and speaking. • Lift and move loads exceeding 50 lb. • Identify primary and secondary voltage and understand induced voltage. • Work safely at heights and in confined spaces, adhering to minimum approach distances. • Understand excavation, shoring, and grounding requirements.
