About the Role

The Senior Municipal Smart Mobility Planning Lead will join the Mobility and Operational Technology Services (MOTS) group, guiding the integration of connected, automated, electric and shared mobility solutions, smart infrastructure, data analytics, ITS and traffic management systems for municipal clients. The role involves strategic coordination with operations staff, the MOTS Smart Mobility Lead and national directors to leverage HDR’s expertise across connected vehicles, automated vehicles, ITS, micromobility, regulatory frameworks, transportation system management and emerging mobility technologies. Key program‑management duties include overseeing complex technology projects, ensuring work is planned, organized and quality‑controlled, refining processes for technical competence and efficiency, and acting as HDR’s technical lead for transportation‑technology initiatives. Business‑development responsibilities require representing HDR at conferences, cultivating client relationships, managing a travel schedule of 20‑30 % (including international trips), and driving revenue growth in the municipal market to achieve $1.5‑4 M in annual net fees. • Lead technical delivery for Connected and Automated Vehicles, ITS, micromobility and related smart mobility projects in municipal markets. • Grow HDR’s MOTS business in Michigan, Canada and broader North America, targeting $1.5‑4 M in annual net fees. • Oversee project planning, organization, control and quality through proactive project‑management processes. • Serve as primary relationship manager, represent HDR at conferences, panels and committees, and cultivate client partnerships. • Manage a travel schedule of 20‑30 % of work time, including international trips to Canada, the Middle East and Australia. • Develop and mentor in‑house staff, recruit talent, and support capacity building across HDR offices. • Provide expertise on federal/state CAV regulations, system‑engineering processes, and transportation system management and operations.

What You Bring

The position expects a 70 % focus on project management, 25 % on opportunity‑specific business development and 5 % on national marketing. Candidates must have at least 15 years of transportation‑technology experience, a professional engineering license (PE or P.Eng preferred), a graduate degree in a related field, and proven leadership of diverse teams. • Minimum 15 years experience in transportation technology (CAV, ITS, smart mobility); PE or P.Eng license preferred; graduate degree in related field. • Demonstrated leadership of diverse teams, project management of complex technology projects, and active involvement in professional societies. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and traffic‑simulation tools such as HCS, CORSIM, Synchro/SIM Traffic.
