About the Role

The Assistant Chief Engineer supervises maintenance personnel in the installation, repair, and upkeep of base building and critical system equipment. This role leads the operating team during the assigned shift, assumes Chief Engineer duties when absent, and remains available for call‑in work, leveraging deep technical expertise in at least one craft area and a working knowledge of others. Management duties include directing maintenance staff, monitoring performance, and ensuring service requests are completed efficiently with minimal disruption. The Engineer diagnoses malfunctioning equipment, determines corrective actions, and restores satisfactory operating conditions. Training responsibilities involve hands‑on instruction in tool use, basic maintenance, safety, and troubleshooting. The Engineer recommends external engineering courses, demonstrates professional standards, and cultivates the capabilities of the operations team. Safety and preventive maintenance tasks include scheduling PM activities, delegating work to qualified staff, ordering parts, and maintaining inventory. The Engineer complies with hazardous material policies, keeps the workplace clean and safe, and ensures an adequate supply of tools and materials. Productivity monitoring encompasses overseeing timely completion of tenant service work orders, reviewing monthly summaries to address recurring issues, and assisting with purchasing specifications and competitive bid analysis for items such as water‑treatment chemicals, HVAC supplies, lighting, and plumbing materials. • Maintain up-to-date system manuals and inspection reports. • Oversee accurate and timely completion of tenant service work orders. • Review monthly service work order summaries to identify and correct recurring operational issues. • Assist in creating purchasing specifications and conducting competitive bid analysis for stock materials (e.g., water‑treatment chemicals, HVAC supplies, lighting, ceiling tiles, paint, electrical, plumbing). • Prepare and submit purchase order requests for supplies and equipment. • Supervise and direct maintenance staff during shift, ensuring performance standards. • Perform or coordinate preventive maintenance tasks with minimal disruption to building services. • Provide hands‑on training on tool use, safety procedures, and basic maintenance techniques. • Ensure compliance with hazardous material storage, usage, and disposal policies. • Manage inventory of tools, parts, and supplies, including ordering and periodic checks. • Respond to call‑in work and emergency equipment failures to restore operations. • Apply knowledge of codes, regulations, and critical systems (FLS, MOPs, SOPs, EOPs, UPS) to reduce liability.

What You Bring

Required knowledge and skills include 3‑5 years of facility engineering experience, at least five years as a journeyman‑level engineer, and proficiency with HVAC, fluid handling, mechanical and electrical systems. The role demands strong communication, computer application expertise (MS Office, CMMS, BMS/BAS), and familiarity with CAD, Visio, and presentation tools. Education and certifications include a high school diploma, two years of trade schooling, and preferably a bachelor’s or associate degree in applied science. Candidates must hold a Wisconsin State Operator’s License, a Refrigerant Universal Card, and have 3‑5 years of engineering supervisory experience. Physical work requirements involve frequent standing, walking, climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in varying temperature extremes. The position does not provide visa sponsorship and requires U.S. work authorization.
