The Senior Plans Examiner is responsible for technically reviewing construction documents for residential, multi-family, and commercial projects. The role ensures drawings, calculations, and soils reports conform to the California Building Standards Codes and referenced standards, emphasizing life-safety and overall code compliance. It requires deep knowledge of inspection and plan-review protocols.
- Review residential, multi-family, and commercial construction documents for compliance with California Building Standards Codes.
- Analyze drawings, calculations, soils reports, and specifications to assess life-safety adequacy.
- Interpret maps, electronic plans, and design coordination documents for code conformity.
- Provide expert code interpretation and suggest alternative compliance solutions.
- Supervise Associate or Assistant Plans Examiners and review their work.
- Prepare and deliver oral and written code‑compliance reports and correction notices.
- Develop proficiency with electronic plan‑check software and related management tools.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with government agencies, architects, contractors, and the public.
- Represent the department at internal and external meetings, exercising sound judgment.
- Stay current on legal and technical developments in building construction and codes.
- Pursue and maintain additional ICC certifications relevant to the role.
- Effectively manage multiple priorities, communicate with diverse stakeholders, and remain calm under pressure.

- Possess 5–10 years of plan‑review experience and a BS in Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- Hold ICC Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing Plans Examiner certification (or equivalent).
- Demonstrate competency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Teams, Zoom, and related platforms.
