Core responsibilities include executing tasks with minimal supervision, supporting manufacturability assessments, developing mechanical design concepts, planning analyses, providing independent reviews, overseeing documentation, understanding industry codes and standards, supervising calculations, managing procured items, implementing engineering changes, coordinating multiple contributors, creating CAD models, performing thermal and hydraulic analyses, writing design documentation, conducting systems engineering, leading external engineering partners, supporting procurement, reviewing system engineering documentation, participating in design reviews, supporting safety culture, managing risks, complying with quality procedures, and performing other duties as assigned.
- Design and develop mechanical systems and components from concept through final design, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and program requirements.
- Conduct process calculations, select and specify equipment, and perform thermal, hydraulic, and structural analyses.
- Lead system engineering processes, integrate technical disciplines, monitor risks, and provide system-level oversight from requirements to operational readiness.
- Execute independent reviews of engineering deliverables, manage documentation, and ensure adherence to industry codes, standards, and X‑energy design guides.
- Supervise hand calculations and analytical tool usage, oversee procurement documentation, and implement engineering changes per approved procedures.
- Coordinate multiple contributors, create and maintain CAD models, and author design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, and drawings.
- Apply project management skills to organize and lead external engineering partners and support material and equipment procurement.
- Maintain safety culture, comply with quality assurance protocols, and manage system and project risks.
- Contribute to X‑energy’s mission of delivering carbon‑free nuclear energy to ensure a cleaner, affordable power future.

Minimum qualifications require a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related ABET‑accredited field, typically five years of mechanical engineering experience, which may be supplemented by academic projects. Advanced degrees (Master’s or Ph.D.) may substitute for part of the experience requirement. Candidates should have experience with mechanical process equipment design, procurement, installation, or operation, and possess knowledge of system requirements management, verification, Systems Engineering processes, and nuclear power plant licensing, regulatory, quality, and safety requirements.
Preferred skills include experience developing or working with system purification technologies such as reverse osmosis or capacitive deionization.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or related) and typically five years of relevant experience; advanced degrees may substitute for experience.
- Possess experience with mechanical process equipment design, installation, operation, and knowledge of nuclear power plant licensing, regulatory, quality, and safety requirements.
- Preferred: experience with system purification technologies such as reverse osmosis or capacitive deionization.
Benefits
The position is located at 530 Gaither Road, Rockville, MD, with expectations of four days onsite work, up to 10% travel as needed, and standard business hours of 8:00 am–5:00 pm ET, Monday through Friday.
Compensation is offered within a salary range of $99,000 to $165,000, based on education, experience, and location, and reflects base salary only, excluding benefits or incentives.
