Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) Shift Manager
Ontario Transit Group - Ontario Line - Southern Civil, Stations & Tunnel
Designs, builds and finances the Southern Civil, Stations & Tunnel section of Toronto’s Ontario Line subway.
Manage safe, efficient underground tunnel excavation using SEM techniques.
Collaborate with engineering and construction teams to develop detailed excavation plans, ensuring adherence to project specifications and timelines.
Oversee the procurement of necessary equipment, materials, and resources for excavation activities.
Providing daily production reports, together with reviewing and provide feedbacks of shift reports from Shift Supervisor. Summarizing weekly and monthly production reports and analysis and proposed improvements is required for review and presentation with management team.
Implement Sequential Excavation Management (SEM) techniques to ensure safe and controlled excavation processes, especially using Roadheaders and Tunnel Excavators as key equipment for tunnel excavation and fully automatic Robot Drilling Machine and Shotcrete Spray Machines for primary support.
Improve the quality of life for commuters by reducing daily travel time.
Together with SEM Manager and Superintendent, managing shift schedules and rotation for tunnel shift engineers and crews. Ensuring adequate staffing and covering during shift changes, conducting handover briefings and debriefings. Monitoring and addressing any issues or concerns during shift changes.
Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, providing regular updates on project progress and addressing any issues that arise.
Reduce crowding on the existing Line 1 (Yonge-University) subway.
Implementing tunnel safety protocols, conducting regular safety inspections and audits, coordinating with emergency services and response teams, staying up-to-date with industry best practices and technological advancements.
Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations throughout all excavation phases, especially implementing ventilation design at different stages of excavation, working with Site Teams to ensure that ventilation equipment is well maintained and always in good working conditions, as well as regularly carrying out gas and air monitoring tunnel ventilation as described in ventilation plan.
Manage and supervise excavation crews, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and quality standards.
Will be involved in the selection process of new crew members as well as recommend for promotion and/or disciplinary actions which could lead to dismissal if deemed necessary.
Obtaining and maintaining necessary daily/ weekly permits and approvals, especially daily Permit To Tunnel (PTT) or Required Excavation Support Sheet (RESS). Ensuring compliance with regulations and design ground support by reviewing and verifying encountered and forecast rock conditions, geotechnical mapping records, instrumentation and monitoring results, testing and verification records, shift reports and safety hazards. Providing mitigating risks and optimizing sequence outcomes.
Working with SEM Manager providing cost and material tracking in regular basis to support end of the months forecast, accrual and cost reports.
Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of excavation projects for SEM Excavation and Lining Scope of Work
Prepare and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including excavation logs, reports, and records of change orders. Collaborate with the project management team to ensure seamless integration of excavation activities with overall project objectives.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in underground construction projects, with a focus on Sequential Excavation Management, especially with Road headers or Tunnel Excavator for excavation and hydraulic formwork for permanent concrete lining
