Description
geological mapping
foundation design
tunnel design
structural analysis
database management
automation
Work in multidisciplinary teams (e.g. structural, civil, bridges & civil structures) for delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects for transportation, water/wastewater, or mining.
Undertake geological mapping and rock mass classification on site
Carry-out shallow and deep foundation design, slope stability calculations, and seismic assessments
Carry out empirical, analytical, and numerical analyses for purposes of tunnel and shaft design (initial support and final lining) for various tunnel construction methods such as drill and blast, sequential excavation method, or TBM bored
Support the completion of temporary support-of-excavation designs, including for basements, shafts, and cut-and-cover tunnels/subway stations
Observe construction site works and geotechnical investigations
Prepare desk study reports on sites due for development
Write specifications for site investigation programs and prepare laboratory test schedules
Use and manage subsurface information database systems
Undertake linear and non-linear structural analysis of shotcrete and concrete tunnel linings based on Code requirements using first principles or structural design software packages (SAP, GSA). Make use of automation and established workflows to follow best practice. Develop workflows and ideas for automation where none exist
Interpret and organize design results into project documentation such as Technical Drawings, Interpretive, or Baseline Reports, or Basis of Design reports
Log soil/rock materials and interpret subsurface conditions to aid design and determine the most appropriate method of construction
Conduct preliminary ground movement predictions, hydrogeological impact and building damage assessments
Use tunnel design and rock mechanics software such as FLAC/FLAC3D, UDEC/3DEC, RocScience, or FracMan
Requirements

Past history of creative problem solving and communication of solutions through technical presentations or reports
Knowledge of common types of shallow and deep foundation and retaining structures, including installation methodology
Good time-management habits, ability to multi-task, ability to sustain focus on long tasks
Ability to communicate thoughts and ideas in an accessible way – distill design tasks and solutions into concise text and presentation slides
Numerical analysis using one of the slope stability analysis software packages (SlopeW, Slide, UTexas, etc.)
EIT/FE or GIT/PG
Numerical modelling skills using one of the finite element analysis software packages (e.g. Plaxis, LSDyna, FLAC/FLAC3D, UDEC/3DEC, RS2/3, MIDAS etc.)
Knowledge in geological and geotechnical interpretation with understanding of geological origin and process and how they influence ground behavior
Advanced courses in foundations, soil mechanics, and rock mechanics
Innovative minds: We’re looking for critical thinkers who embrace new ideas and challenge the status quo.
Sound knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals, soil and rock mechanics, and tunneling methods
Pursuing a Master's or PhD in one of the abovementioned degrees
Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering/Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Underground Construction/Tunneling, or Mining Engineering.
