Chief Engineer

Description

The Chief Engineer reports to the General Manager within the Engineering department and is responsible for maintaining the hotel’s engineering systems to the highest standards while adhering to all health and safety regulations.

In this role you will ensure that all engineering aspects of the property run smoothly, from routine repairs to forward‑thinking improvements, keeping the hotel looking sharp and operating like clockwork.

• Carry out a preventive maintenance program to ensure the hotel is maintained and in service for guests (e.g., lighting, refrigeration, heating, air‑conditioning, water treatment systems, pools, etc.)
• Perform preventative maintenance, repairs or make recommendations for repairs of all mechanical/electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing systems, building components, and furniture, fixtures, and equipment
• Maintain a clean and organized environment in the maintenance room
• Ensure proper appearance of the hotel from entrance to roof, including parking lot, walkways, landscaping, service and trash areas, and exterior of all buildings
• Ensure the hotel meets/exceeds Opal and brand quality standards for property condition
• Ensure a safe and secure environment for guests, team members and hotel assets in compliance with policies, procedures and regulatory requirements
• Prioritize and complete work orders from guests and hotel team members
• Perform maintenance functions safely without jeopardizing personal, associate or guest health, safety or security
• Follow Opal safety and security training and protocol in emergencies
• Understand and respond to customers’ needs to ensure high guest satisfaction
• Work closely with front office staff and housekeeping to meet/exceed Opal and brand standards for guest satisfaction
• Satisfy all guest requests/work orders in accordance with Opal training and standards
• Politely greet and acknowledge all guests and hotel associates as encountered
• Control and manage engineering operational expenses including labor, overtime, supplies, and suggest cost‑saving strategies
• Assist with hotel renovations and other projects, ensuring timely completion within budget
• Maintain and organize maintenance supply inventory and be steward of hotel assets
• Send daily end‑of‑day activity and accomplishment email to the Facilities Manager, General Manager and copy to the Opal Director of Operations
• Use property management system and facilities management software (e.g., Lodgistics) to communicate daily activities
• Perform, administer, and document preventative maintenance programs
• Complete work orders in a timely manner
• Respond to and attend guest repair requests; communicate with guests to resolve maintenance issues
• Test, troubleshoot, and perform basic repair on all equipment types, including plumbing, electrical, components, and guest‑room items
• Perform pool/spa repairs and daily maintenance
• Maintain maintenance inventory and requisition parts and supplies as needed
• Inform the Facilities Manager of any unique situations or unusual developments in maintenance operations
• Work any shift, including audit and fill‑in when others cannot work their scheduled shift
• Promote goodwill by being courteous, friendly, and helpful to guests, managers, and associates

Requirements

• High school diploma or related vocational training
• At least 1 year maintenance experience, preferably in a hotel
• Ability to lift heavy objects
• Fluent English; other languages such as Spanish preferred
• In‑depth knowledge of HVAC/PTAC units, plumbing, electrical, and general carpentry (tile, carpet, sheet rock, etc.)
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license if the hotel has a pool
• Understand all hotel operating procedures
• Excellent time management skills
• Good communication skills
• Willingness to take responsibility and accountability
• Willing to work weekends and holidays if required
• Well‑groomed and professional appearance
