

Manages and upgrades UK gas distribution networks across Scotland and southern England.
The overall purpose of the role is to support the business and the Legal Property team by ensuring SGN has the appropriate property consents and agreements needed to protect and reduce risk to the group’s infrastructure and assets. SGN delivers safety, warmth and comfort to homes and businesses, and every role contributes to this mission.
You will engage with stakeholders at all levels – landowners, land agents, solicitors and internal heads – to prepare, negotiate and secure contracts for laying gas apparatus, including purchasing or leasing land and obtaining necessary consents. You will also manage project budgets and timescales, oversee rent payments for SGN sites and negotiate rent reviews.
The role requires advising the business and securing all statutory and planning consents, agreeing access routes with landowners, and negotiating compensation for any loss arising from work. You will document agreements in legally binding contracts and ensure obligations are fulfilled, as well as instruct, oversee and manage external land agents.
We are looking for practical knowledge of agricultural land valuation or a similar background, with utilities experience considered beneficial. A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel throughout South East England for inspections and meetings is essential. Strong communication skills, high attention to detail, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and comfort with lone working are also required.
The Land Officer role is available across all Southern offices including Orpington, Horley, Ashford, Aldershot, Epsom, Poole and Oxford. It is a full‑time, hybrid position with two days per week in the office or on site.
