The Assistant Shift Supervisor supports the supervision of administrative and operational security activities in a correctional/detention facility, directly supervising officers on the shift and serving as acting Shift Supervisor in their absence. The role includes directing officers in supervising inmates/residents, protecting legal rights, and conducting regular inspections of security and control functions. The position requires flexibility to work any post assignment on any shift.
Key duties include supervising assigned security staff, evaluating performance, providing guidance on safety and security practices and post orders, interpreting and enforcing rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and contract requirements, attending meetings to enhance communication between management, staff and inmates/residents, and assisting in streamlining communications and maintaining operational consistency between shifts.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, three years of criminal‑justice experience, one year of corrections experience with inmate custody, and a valid driver’s license. Preferred qualifications are one year of supervisory experience, additional education in criminal justice (substitutable for experience up to two years), and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
