The Line Apprentice supports operations by learning the distribution system, computer tools, equipment, and materials, while being available for on‑call duties and working any hours required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Work involves shift work, overtime, weekend schedules, and exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, confined spaces, and emergency situations that may require travel and periodic call‑out duty.
- Install and repair electrical equipment such as street lighting, load control devices, transformers, capacitors, and meters.
- Construct overhead and underground distribution lines per engineering specifications, including setting poles and pulling cable.
- Perform preventative maintenance and use test equipment (volt/amp meters) to assess equipment performance.
- Respond to trouble calls and service interruptions, including emergency and outage situations.
- Work on‑call, shift, overtime, weekends, holidays, and in inclement weather as needed.
- Maintain safety compliance and follow company safety rules and procedures.

After applying, candidates must complete an online test, the Modern Hire Virtual Assessment for Lineworkers, a Physical Abilities Test, and obtain a valid Class A CDL within one year of hire, along with required DOT physicals and certifications.
Applicants must reside within a 40‑minute commute of their assigned site and be prepared to relocate at their own expense within 12 months of the start date.
- Meet basic qualifications: high school diploma/GED and valid driver's license.
- Desired qualifications: Lineman’s Training School certificate, technical school line program, military or utility industry experience, climbing and power‑line work experience.
- Complete Duke Energy’s virtual assessment, physical abilities test, and obtain a Class A CDL within one year.
- Pass DOT physical, respirator clearance, and meet weight, vision, and manual dexterity requirements.
- Reside within 40 minutes of assigned operations center and be willing to relocate at personal expense within 12 months.
