The Sr. Relay Technician leads and supervises electrical testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays in power stations. Responsibilities include using relay test equipment, analyzing protection schemes, and managing end‑to‑end relay testing and commissioning activities. The role also involves project leadership, customer interaction, and training of junior technicians.
- Lead safety briefings and apply Human Performance Error Elimination tools.
- Analyze protection schemes and event records to diagnose issues.
- Install, commission, and test substation control circuits, relays, transformers, and circuit breakers.
- Develop project execution, commissioning, outage, and energization procedures.
- Manage large‑scale projects and serve as on‑site lead, assigning tasks and prioritizing activities.
- Train and qualify Relay Technician I, II, and Relay Engineer I personnel.
- Perform end‑to‑end relay testing using software and conduct root‑cause investigations.
- Review and interpret protection/control schematics, ensuring compliance with standards.
- Produce final deliverables, including as‑built drawings and test reports.

- Calibrate and functional test electromechanical and microprocessor protective relays.
- Pass pre‑employment drug screen and background check; hold a valid driver’s license with a clean record.
- 5+ years hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations.
- Proficiency with relay test software and troubleshooting of distribution and transmission control circuits.
- Ability to work overtime, travel out of town, climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and lift up to 70 lb.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment.
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in electrical/electronic technology, military experience, or engineering degree.
- NETA III/IV certification preferred.
