Senior Engineer - System Protection and Control

Description

• Develop and direct detailed drawings for relaying single lines, secondary protective relay schemes and schematics, low voltage equipment power, and control system connections for generation, transmission, and distribution protection.
• Provide work directions to other staff/contractors on projects as assigned.
• Perform all work in a safe and timely manner.
• Monitor the project during construction start-up and recommend modifications necessary to support project success.
• Analyze data and make recommendations and/or decisions.
• Develop protective relay settings as required for new facility (generation, transmission, distribution and industrial) equipment protection and modify existing facility protective relay settings to maintain optimum system protection.
• Perform analysis of system disturbances to determine proper operation of the protection scheme and assist in investigation of root cause.
• Lead development of work plans and monitor actual progress of applicable portions, taking any corrective action required.
• Develop and/or apply new technologies to generation, transmission, and distribution facilities to achieve an optimum level of protection.
• Provide engineering assistance for customers and internal staff.
• Provide project management for protection and control projects in engineering and construction and/or generation production.
• Lead coordination of contractors or staff on project related work, certification of completed work, and recommendation of final acceptance of the project.
• Develop cabling requirements for relay cabinets, equipment, and relay panels.
• Comply with company policies and procedures.
• Maintain and coordinate contracts with equipment suppliers and monitor progress, expediting as required to meet schedules.
• Manage multiple assignments while training, developing, and mentoring less experienced engineers and other staff.
• Perform project management duties for small and larger projects simultaneously and assist other engineers with their projects.
• Develop protection system switching procedures.
• Develop building layout drawings for control houses and battery buildings.
• Function as a technical representative in customer, vendor, and contractor meetings.
• Provide protective relay scheme insight to help establish the arrangement and location of substation facilities.
• Coordinate and oversee substation and industrial control system field testing and modification, phasing tests, and other commissioning and check-out activities for all generation, transmission, distribution and industrial protection schemes, with contractors and other Telex departments, at the customer substation and industrial sites.
• Develop/finalize reports and work plans, recommend action, and consider short/long-range objectives and economic and budget considerations.
• Design and manage the installation of generation, transmission, distribution and industrial facility replacements and upgrades.
• Develop and coordinate departmental project work plans and manage through completion, redirecting when necessary.
• Create corporate standards and specifications related to respective expertise.
• Develop bidding documents, evaluate and establish lowest bids for industrial, distribution, and transmission substations.
• Provide direction and technical assistance with digital computer programs and perform analysis as needed including power quality, fault, and system coordination studies, loss evaluations, relay software, relay event analysis, protection asset databases, and arc flash.
• Prepare construction, equipment, material specifications, and work scope.
• Perform SME tasks on assigned NERC and/or CIP Compliance standards.
• Maintain and approve technical records (e.g. drawings, files, databases).
• Oversee and/or complete preparation of estimates (cost, work order, schedules).

Requirements

• Experience developing computer programs or scripts is required.
• Ability to make responsible decisions in the execution of contract requirements.
• Understanding of negotiation and conflict resolution processes.
• A registered professional engineering license is required.

• Thorough understanding of how decision making and work product impacts other systems, operations, and processes.
• Analytical skills, including interpretive and complex problem-solving and decision-making skills pertaining to electric power systems, engineering, economics, and/or financial analysis.
• Demonstrate strong technical expertise and awareness of job-related field and continue to remain current in the industry.
• Exceptional project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• A valid driver's license and a good driving record are required.
• Ability to plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering.
• Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
• Thorough knowledge of all relevant procedures, specifications, and applicable codes, regulations, compliance rules, and standards (e.g. IEEE, NERC, etc.).
• An individual capable of working in both a team environment and independently with minimal oversight.
• Proven leadership experience is required.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with internal and external company contacts.
• Ability to lead and provide work direction to others.
• A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible engineering work experience is required.
• A logical thinker who can understand instructions on specific objectives, complex features, and possible solutions and formulate high-quality engineering workmanship.
• Knowledge of engineering, operations, strategy, project management, and budgeting processes and procedures.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, CADD, and other common business applications is required.
• Ability to read, interpret, and prepare system and equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, and engineering drawings.
• Seasoned engineering knowledge and judgement in the area of protection and control in generation, transmission, distribution and industrial environments.
• Proven ability to creatively apply technical skills to projects and activities.
• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school is required.
• Thorough understanding of business acumen, company financial structure, and business plans.
• Thorough understanding of commercial and contractual aspects of company business.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including, but not limited to communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences and produce reports, emails, and presentations.
• Seasoned engineering knowledge and sound judgement of engineering practices and standards.
