Paint Helper

Description

• Cover surfaces with drop cloths, masking tape, and paper to protect them during painting.
• Select and mix coating additives to adjust thinning, drying, and adhesion.
• Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers.
• Use high‑pressure sandblasting, chemical applications, chipping hammers, power tools, and abrasives to remove rust, grease, dirt, concrete, and old paint.
• Apply primers or sealers to prepare bare wood, metal, piping, fixtures, structures, and equipment.
• Select paint according to company color scheme and specifications.
• Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes using brushes, spray guns, sandblasting equipment, or rollers; may use epoxy, latex, or enamel coatings.
• Calculate material quantities and estimate costs based on surface measurements or work orders.
• Read work orders or receive instructions to determine work requirements.
• Disassemble, clean, and maintain paint and sandblasting equipment.
• Erect scaffolding, swing gates, or set up ladders for work above ground level.
• Remove fixtures such as pictures, door knobs, lamps, and switch covers before painting.
• Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, etc., and sand rough spots for proper adhesion.
• Mix colors and additives to achieve desired paint, stain, or varnish consistency.
• Use respiratory protection as required.
• Observe and comply with all safety and project rules; perform other duties as required.
• Apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
• Plan work and select proper tools.
• Compare size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
• Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
• Make decisions based on measurable criteria.

Requirements

Helpers with 0‑42 months of experience must have at least six months of documented field work in their chosen craft. The role involves painting walls, equipment, buildings, bridges, and other structural surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray guns, as well as preparing surfaces by removing old paint, mixing colors, and applying appropriate coatings.

Candidates should possess a high school diploma or equivalent and demonstrated knowledge of painting application techniques, shop mathematics, and tool selection. Work is performed under direct supervision, following established guidelines and safety rules, with decisions based on measurable criteria.

The position demands frequent standing, walking, and occasional sitting, with the ability to lift and carry up to 40 lb, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and handle tools. Frequent use of respiratory protection is required.
