The Road Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, servicing and repairing contracted roadway assets—including medians, signs, guardrails, fences, bridges, tunnels and vegetation—according to contract standards and supervisor direction. The role may support seasonal equipment operations for winter or summer as needed.
Key duties include establishing safe traffic control, performing work at heights with bucket trucks or aerial lifts, repairing bridge structures and equipment rooms, maintaining drainage systems, catch basins, pumps and fire hydrants, and servicing ventilation, electrical, CCTV and lighting systems. The technician also transports crew and equipment, conducts road surface repairs, removes litter and vegetation, and responds to emergency rotations during evenings, weekends and holidays.
Work is performed outdoors in traffic and variable weather conditions, with exposure to noise, chemicals, insects and occasional confined spaces. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 lb, climbing, working at heights, and using pneumatic, hydraulic, gas and electric tools.
The position requires a demonstrated knowledge of underground infrastructure maintenance, strict adherence to safety procedures, the ability to recognize hazards, and proficiency with hand and power tools. Strong communication, basic math, and the capacity to interpret safety rules and technical documents are essential.
A high school diploma or GED is required; one year of infrastructure maintenance experience is preferred. Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license with a good record, and certifications such as CDL, DOT/MTO, electrical or welding are highly desirable.
