The technician will install, commission, test, and maintain protective relay equipment, digital fault recorders, remote terminal units and communication processors, and perform functional testing on transmission and substation equipment. The role requires interpreting schematics, preparing test reports, and managing time and expense documentation while maintaining company vehicles.
- Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relay equipment, powerline carrier equipment, digital fault recorders (DFRs), remote terminal units (RTUs), and communication processors
- Perform functional testing for protection and control circuitry on transmission lines, HV bus, transformers, circuit breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks
- Conduct RTU and telecom upgrades for various clients
- Work with SEL microprocessor relays (311C, 311L, 387, 411L, 421, 487B, 487E, 487V, 587, 587Z, 787)
- Work with GE microprocessor relays (C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, T60)
- Operate various RTUs and communication processors from GE, Telvent, SEL, Cooper, and Novatech
- Review, document, and submit test reports for client reporting and regulatory purposes
- Interpret single‑line, three‑line, wiring, schematic diagrams and communication configurations, identifying discrepancies
- Complete time and expense reports and maintain assigned company vehicle
- Complete 30‑hour OSHA training
- Work in field environments subject to changing outdoor conditions

Candidates should have at least five years of electrical testing experience with protection and control equipment, a BS in Engineering or related technical education, and familiarity with SEL, GE and other relay systems as well as NERC CIP requirements. The position pays $65‑$85 per hour, requires a valid driver’s license, ability to lift 50 lb, completion of OSHA training, and compliance with background and drug testing. - Minimum 5+ years experience in electrical testing with protection and control equipment, RTUs, and telecom for HV utility, co‑op, power generation, federal, or municipal clients
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Technology, technical school diploma, or relevant military experience (Army Prime Power or Navy Nuclear)
- Experience with transmission and distribution relays (SEL, GE, ABB, Westinghouse)
- Experience with substation RTUs, communication processors, and telecom equipment for brownfield and greenfield projects
- Ability to scope, schedule, and budget protection/control, RTU, and telecom projects
- Project management experience for protection/control teams in HV substations
- Familiarity with NERC CIP requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lb, climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and drive regularly (with accommodations as needed)
- Pass fit‑for‑duty physical exam, pre‑employment drug test, and periodic unannounced drug tests
- Pass background check covering at least the past 7 years
- Valid driver’s license and meet minimum vehicle insurability standards
- Willingness to work overtime and travel extensively to client locations
- Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English
