Reporting to the Senior Director, FP&A, the Senior Manager, Capital Planning will lead GFL’s capital planning function from a finance perspective and serve as a key business partner to Operations leadership. This role oversees end‑to‑end capital budgeting and forecasting, drives deeper financial insights, establishes capital‑related KPIs, and ensures strong alignment between operational needs and financial strategy. The senior‑level position also leads a small team and owns system governance for the Workday Capital Module.
Own the capital budgeting and forecasting processes, ensuring accuracy, strategic prioritization, and alignment across the organization. Lead development of the multi‑year capital investment plan that integrates operational requirements with financial objectives. Oversee governance of capital requests, approvals, reporting, and the entire capital lifecycle. Enhance reporting outputs for various management groups and ensure the Workday Capital Module maintains data integrity, process compliance, and workflow optimization. Lead, mentor, and develop two direct reports supporting capital planning and analysis.
Partner closely with Operations leadership to understand business drivers, validate capital requirements, and challenge assumptions when necessary. Provide financial insights to evaluate the necessity, timing, and ROI of proposed capital projects, and facilitate cross‑functional discussions to align investment with operational performance expectations.
Develop, track, and report capital‑related KPIs such as asset utilization, spend efficiency, and project performance metrics. Produce monthly capital reporting packages that include actuals, forecasts, risks/opportunities, and executive commentary, and support the Capital Committee with analysis, financial models, and business cases.
Ensure capital cash‑flow forecasting reflects accurate timing of expenditures, payment terms, and vendor conditions, while partnering with Accounting on capitalization policies, month‑end processes, and cash versus accrual reconciliation. Identify opportunities to streamline capital planning processes, systems, and reporting standards.
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field is required; CPA and/or CFA designation is strongly preferred. Candidates should have 7‑10 years of progressive experience in FP&A, capital planning, corporate finance, or related areas. Experience partnering with Operations or supporting asset‑intensive businesses and prior people‑leadership experience are considered assets.
Strong financial modeling and analytical capabilities are essential, along with expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and capital planning frameworks. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with the Workday Capital Module are valuable. Solid knowledge of IFRS accounting principles for capital assets, depreciation, and capitalization rules is required, as is understanding of capital cash‑flow management, payment terms, and vendor financing. Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence senior stakeholders, communicate complex financial concepts to non‑finance audiences, and drive continuous improvement is expected.
