The Asphalt Area Manager will provide overall direction and leadership to the existing Hot-Mix Asphalt line of business in Eastern KY. They will be responsible for making key decisions and recommendations related to safety, profitability, plant operations, production efficiencies, capital projects, plant quality control, internal and external sales, inventory and adherence to environmental and local rules and regulations, and resource management and people development.

  • Interface with vendors for raw material deliveries, equipment, and plant maintenance.
  • Establish and monitor key performance goals and targets to achieve budget, company initiatives, and enhance the company’s financial returns.
  • Manage vision and purpose.
  • Respond to employee and customer related issues and project delivery challenges.
  • Interface with Management, Plant Managers, Plant Operators, and Maintenance personnel for major repairs or replacements.
  • Ensure that all crews have the tools and training to always operate safely and that all federal, state, and local laws concerning safety, environment, and other applicable areas (i.e., OSHA, MSHA) are strictly enforced.
  • Create and manage capital improvement plans, strategic planning, and forecasts.
  • Be engaged in the growth of community and customer relationships. Both individually and with internal staff.
  • Coordinate with construction managers and facilities to establish production schedules and efficient use of personnel to meet customer demands and optimize production capabilities.
  • Responsible for understanding future demand forecasting.
  • Conduct staff meetings with personnel and participate in management staff meetings.
  • Manage personnel in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable employment laws. This includes training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding employees, disciplining employees, long term personnel development and succession planning, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Generate and manage the operating budget for the fiscal year under the direction of management.
  • Oversight, support, and management of Hot Mix Asphalt Plant operations, maintenance, and supporting transportation.
  • Promote a safe working culture for all employees; work with safety and field personnel to minimize risk and always increase safety for employees.

  • Capable of working independently and managing multiple priorities
  • Ability to see the big picture while focusing on the process and procedures necessary to produce deliverables.
  • Experience in creating, working within and/or administering an assigned budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and facilitate cross functional teams.

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Engineering, Business, or related field; OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of asphalt plant mechanics
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills include the ability to interact comfortably and respectfully with all levels of plant and corporate personnel.
  • Strong analytical, fact-based approach to support sound decision-making. Strategic minded with strong finance experience and skills.
  • Strong organizational skills – can bring order and clarity to ambiguous, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong work ethic, willing to put in the time and energy required to drive performance.
  • Demonstrated success in coaching and developing others; shared his/her knowledge.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal, written, and listening – at all levels in the organization.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in the operation of Hot-Mix Asphalt facilities, construction, or other directly related industry experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in managing employees and/or leading a crew.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively multitask in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated business acumen in plant operations and Quality Control as it relates to sales, finance, or IT.
  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer focused with attention to detail and capable of delivering accurate, quality results in a timely, consistent, and professional manner.
  • Entrepreneurial mind-set and can think like a business owner.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ supervisory experience.
  • High degree of drive, initiative, and motivation. Action oriented and results oriented.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and record of accomplishment. Success in leading & driving changes in organizations and increasing profitability.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution preferred.
