This posting covers multiple positions and levels within American Electric Power’s Protection & Control (P&C) Technician family. Employees will install, operate, test, and maintain protection and control devices such as digital and electromechanical relays, intelligent electronic devices, station disturbance recorders, digital fault recorders, oscillographs, RTUs, SCADA systems, statistical load meters, telemetering, and transducers. The role also includes work on power line carriers, tone, pilot wire, fiber, and associated communications equipment, with responsibility to respond to emergency call‑outs and coordinate rapid service restoration.
Key duties include assisting with acceptance and installation testing of protection, control, and measurement equipment, and performing switching operations under direct supervision of qualified personnel. Technicians will install, maintain, and operate power line carriers, station SCADA, and related communication cables, while keeping test and automotive equipment in good working order. Accurate records, reports, and drawings must be prepared and maintained, and all work performed in accordance with safety rules, NERC regulations, and environmental policies. Regular testing, calibration, and computer‑based diagnosis of devices are required to identify and correct faults.
Applicants must hold an associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology, electronic technology, or a related field; no prior work experience is required. The position demands heavy physical effort, including lifting 50‑100 lb occasionally and 25‑50 lb frequently, and may involve travel exceeding 50 % of the time with overtime as needed. A valid state driver’s license and successful completion of the Physical Abilities Test are mandatory. Employees are expected to develop the knowledge and skills needed to advance to the senior P&C Technician classification.
