The Principal Cable System Design Engineer role sits within AECOM’s expanding Transmission & Distribution team and carries senior responsibility for technical excellence across high‑voltage cable projects. The engineer will lead the planning, design and delivery of cable systems for transmission and distribution operators, private developers and international energy majors, acting as a trusted advisor and shaping technical standards, innovation strategy and digital delivery in the cable engineering space. This position places the candidate at the forefront of the energy transition, delivering world‑class solutions that will define the future grid.
- Lead delivery of large‑scale HV/EHV cable system projects from concept through commissioning.
- Design and oversee HV cable routing, burial risk assessments, and thermal, electromagnetic and mechanical performance modelling.
- Provide expert input on cable system ratings, installation methodologies, jointing arrangements, cleating design and system integration in challenging environments.
- Validate complex calculations (ampacity, short‑circuit forces, EMC, induced voltages, thermomechanical forces) to meet National Grid, IEC and CIGRÉ standards.
- Engage with clients and stakeholders, delivering technical assurance, strategic direction and value‑engineered solutions for high‑profile programmes.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs (civil, structural, OHL, substation, marine) to ensure cohesive, integrated design solutions.
- Manage technical risks, interfaces and quality reviews throughout project execution, supporting procurement, construction and commissioning phases.
- Conduct third‑party inspections, FAT/SAT witnessing and vendor oversight for cable and ancillary equipment.
- Mentor and develop the cable engineering team, fostering knowledge sharing and capability growth.
- Support business development activities, including proposals, bid reviews and client presentations.

- Proven technical leadership in HV/EHV cable system design and installation, including tunnel, urban and constrained environments.
- Deep understanding of UK and international standards (National Grid TPs, IEC, CIGRÉ).
- Experience in regulated, quality‑assured environments with TSOs/DNOs such as National Grid, SSE or EirGrid.
- Strong coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams and senior stakeholder engagement.
- Excellent communication, client‑facing and team leadership abilities.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (MSc/MEng advantageous).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it.
- National Grid CDAE certification or equivalent.
- Proficiency with cable analysis software (e.g., CYMCAP, WinCable) and advanced analysis tools.
