Safety Security Officer

Description

Westhab complies with all applicable OSHA standards, rules, and regulations to maintain safe and healthful working conditions and to keep workplaces free of recognized serious hazards.

The position is an overnight shift covering a 40‑hour work week.

• Perform daily inspections of all clients’ rooms
• Escort clients to appointments as needed
• Interact with and monitor the client’s behavior and maintain a good rapport by providing excellent customer service; encourage clients to comply with facility policy and procedures
• Control access at the main entrance by screening all clients and visitors with a magnetometer or x‑ray machine to detect and prevent weapons from entering the site
• Perform Crisis Intervention to de‑escalate potential crises and document all such situations and interventions
• Make hourly rounds throughout the entire facility, including all hallways, stairwells, floors, bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchen, and office spaces
• Respond to incidents
• Assist with client intakes
• Perform daily pack‑ups and log client property for AWOL clients
• Store and remove client property once the mandated storage time has expired
• Maintain a clean and organized storage area
• Complete logs, incident reports, and all other required documentation
• Make calls to police, fire department, and other first responders as directed
• Perform administrative and receptionist duties at the operations desk; monitor video surveillance cameras and the fire prevention/detection alarm notification system
• Provide duties related to fire incidents, evacuation of the building when necessary, utilizing the fire procedure
• Ensure the safety and security of all assigned equipment

Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, prior security experience, a NYS Security Guard License, and an 8‑hour annual fire guard certificate for shelters. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required; certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention is preferred, and flexible shifts, weekends, and overtime may be required.

Benefits

The Safety Security Officer (Non-Exempt) position is in the Services – Security division, reporting to the Shift Supervisor, with a salary of $19.65 hourly. The role ensures the safety and security of clients, staff, and property at a homeless shelter and requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
