Protection Application Design Engineer

Description

The successful individual will support the in‑house project delivery team on works across several asset classes, including substations, underground cables, overhead lines and civil works, covering system voltages from low voltage up to 132 kV.

The Protection Applications Design Engineer ensures the design and integration of protection, control and SCADA systems across all distribution assets. The role involves producing and reviewing technical designs, drawings and specifications in line with national and company standards, and supporting project portfolios throughout their lifecycle.

• Assess and utilise company documentation and functional specifications.
• Produce connection, protection and tripping‑logic diagrams.
• Specify current and voltage transformers for protection and metering schemes.
• Generate relay programmable logic files, setting files, and IEC61850/DNP3 communication files.
• Create CAD drawings (MicroStation V8i/AutoCAD 2021) for connections, protection and logic.
• Apply national protection standards (ENATS, TPS, BEBS, Elexon) across voltage levels.
• Review protection designs from independent connection providers.
• Specify relay panel hardware, multicore schedules, bus wiring and cable termination equipment.
• Provide project designs, non‑standard scheme descriptions and detailed relay application notes.
• Conduct witness testing and attend Factory Acceptance Testing.
• Interface with customers and internal/external resources.
• Deliver designs on schedule, record project time and report progress.
• Attend project meetings and maintain effective team communication.
• Perform duties under CDM Regulations as Designer.
• Update asset recording and data systems.
• Mentor and support members of the Protection Application Design Team.
• Obtain and maintain operational authorisations for unsupervised substation access and supervision.

Requirements

• Hold a degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred) or a Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 10 years experience as a Protection Design Engineer in electricity distribution/transmission.
• Expert knowledge of protection design for switchgear, transformers and feeders up to 132 kV.
• Ability to manage multiple design schemes simultaneously and meet project deadlines.
• Professionalism under pressure and tight timescales.
• Recent experience designing protection for generation connections and legacy system integration (preferred).
• Willingness to travel between work locations, sites and supplier offices.
• Valid UK driving licence.
