The Operating Engineer S2 – Critical Environments is responsible for maintaining and repairing electrical, mechanical, and plumbing/piping equipment, machinery, and controls in both interior and exterior building areas. Reporting to a supervisor, the engineer ensures continuous operation and preventive maintenance of all building systems in a data‑center environment.
Key duties include testing, monitoring, and analyzing data for fire/life safety, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and backup systems; adjusting and maintaining refrigeration, chilled‑water, air‑conditioning, boilers, pumps, valves, and filters; diagnosing problems and taking corrective action; installing and repairing plumbing, wiring, motors, pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, and electrical controls; operating UPS systems, generators, chillers, and critical air‑conditioning units; overseeing contractors, providing training, and ensuring compliance with safety and emergency procedures; keeping detailed engineering logs and rounds; and enforcing the Critical Facility Work Authorization process and engineering guidelines.
Candidates must have hands‑on experience in a data‑center or critical facility, including work with UPS systems, emergency generators, and switch‑gear. Required credentials include a high school diploma or GED, an Operating Engineer license (SMA) or equivalent, and certification as a Universal Technician for CFCs within 90 days of hire. Proficiency with Word and Excel, strong verbal and written communication, and a proven record of excellent internal and external customer service are also required.
