In this role you will lead utility designation projects in both rural and urban settings, employing geophysical equipment, surveys, and vacuum excavation to expose and map underground utilities. You will manage 2D and 3D QL‑B mapping projects, oversee up to two crews, and ensure all safety certifications are current. Coordination with clients, utility and property owners, as well as third‑party services, is essential to successful field execution.
- Designate utilities using geophysical equipment, field documentation, surveys, and vacuum excavation.
- Obtain and maintain required safety certifications.
- Manage 2D QL‑B and 3D QL‑B mapping projects with up to two crews.
- Select and apply non‑standard surface geophysical equipment for complex utility mapping.
- Collect data and complete vault diagram forms for 3D mapping projects.
- Lead crews operating vacuum excavators to excavate and backfill test holes in deep or challenging conditions.
- Use total station survey equipment to collect horizontal data for 2D mapping and QL‑A test holes.
- Use RTK GPR survey equipment to collect horizontal and vertical data for 3D mapping.
- Use automatic/digital levels to collect vertical data from gravity‑flow utility structures.
- Collect data and complete Structures Data Reports for gravity‑flow utility systems.
- Coordinate with clients, utility owners, property owners, and third‑party field services.
- Interpret planimetric and design plans, profiles, cross sections, and utility records.

Candidates must hold a high‑school diploma, be able to travel, and possess a thorough understanding of ASCE 38 guidelines. Required experience includes serving as a lead on SUE QL‑A and QL‑B field crews, with additional preferred experience as a project‑level supervisor, survey work, and military background. Four to five years of SUE field experience is preferred.
